After 35 years as a pharmacist, medical industry executive and father of diabetic child, he was fed up with the confusing, contradictory and inaccurate information available on losing weight, eating well, and exercise. The specific prompt to start the three years of research and writing that led to his course occurred when his daughter was heading off to college where she'd need to manage her diabetes by herself. He searched for an information resource on weight, nutrition and fitness she could have as a reference at school and couldn't find anything even close to being acceptable. Every book he reviewed was filled with so much misinformation and misdirection he was convinced reading any of them would cause more harm than good – so he decided he had to develop such a reference himself. Why did Sharon Greene Patton write her book? After 25 years of dieting, she came to the realization that dieting had done more to her than not make her thin. It had eroded her confidence, made her feel miserable a good deal of the time, endangered her health, ruined countless days, made her crazy when it came to food and, finally, had actually caused her to gain weight. She believed she was fat because she was weak and had no self-control despite having stayed on diets for a year at a time. She viewed herself as a failure, despite the fact that she had put herself through college and graduate school and established a successful teaching career. In talking with other overweight people, she learned their struggles were surprisingly similar. This prompted her to stop dieting and spend two years conducting research into what makes people fat, why dieting doesn't work, and what she could do about it. Her book is the result of that research. Allen and Sharon are not academic researchers, physicians, dieticians or exercise physiologists so why should anyone pay attention to what they say? Before answering that question, let us add to the list of what Allen and Sharron are not:
and disgusted with the lack of truthful information on these subjects and became passionate about making it available. Frankly, it is their independence from the mainstream weight-loss, food and exercise industries that enables them take a fresh look at the available evidence and avoid the biases so common in these subject areas. For example, many books are just compilations of the author's experiences with patients during their career. Obviously, the patients with whom a academic researcher interacts are going to be different than those of a clinician. Each patient's problems are different, their motivations are different, their treatment is different – and these differences, combined with the specific educational background of the author, influence the book's content. The bias of a sales agent for a product/service is even more pronounced. This bias doesn't exist with Allen and Sharron so their writings only reflect what they've learned through education, research and personal experience. Between them they have read hundreds of books written for the lay public and medical professionals, spent countless hours in medical school libraries, and interviewed numerous experts in the field They have read studies dating back to the 1800s and investigated almost every new study reported by the media. In addition, Allen has a B.S. in biology and pharmacy which provided him with a foundation in human physiology at the level of any medical school program. However, unlike medical school, his pharmacy education provided a great depth of information on vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients – what they do, how they're absorbed, how they're metabolized, how they work and other details far beyond what most other physicians learned. Then, following graduation, he participated in a residency program at a large university teaching hospital where he rotated through a wide variety of hospital clinical roles. Allen's work experience includes being a healthcare provider both in retail and hospital pharmacy and working as a senior executive in both the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. In these roles, Allen has gone on medical rounds with physicians, performed nutrition research, provided nutrition education to diabetics, and interacted at the highest levels within one of the largest drug companies in the U.S. Also, from the time Allen’s daughter was 8, he has had a second career as a diabetic mentor. Since 1994, he has gone to diabetes seminars, read books on diabetes, attended family-training workshops, and personally dealt with the daytime (and nighttime) issues created by this disease. As a result of having his daughter treated at a nationally-recognized children's hospital, he learned from some of the world's experts. Today, Allen writes two regularly-published newsletters, contributes to several health-related blogs, and is in the process of writing more titles on health and fitness. Bottom line, Allen and Sharon have backgrounds related to their book's content few others can claim and their independence from the weight-loss, food and exercise industries makes it possible for them to present material without the biases normally found in authors writing on the subjects of weight, nutrition, and fitness. Isn't the simple answer to weight loss to just eat less and exercise more? Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. It is this common thinking which is one of the primary reasons for the existence of the "obesity epidemic." What is the B.I.T.E. Method for effortless weight management?
